Good day my people, I sure hope you all doing great? Anyway, have been off blogging for few days due to some chores that needed my attention so bad. The weekend came with great expectations on my mind and number one topping the list was to have a really quiet time with myself in bed, yeah, I planned having my Saturday morning in the bed. My body needed rest so much that I was already craving for it even before the weekend came. Someone would ask if we didn’t have a-two-day public holiday for Monday and Tuesday. Yeah we sure did, but I felt I needed more, just a little more. I am a good sleeper so I knew I‘d judiciously utilize that already planned Saturday morning very well!
With my anticipation so high and already couldn’t wait to get home after Friday work hours, I got a call from my very close friend who got married at the start of the year and was already ‘’months gone’’, asking me if I was free and could come and spend the weekend with her. The questions came so quick and knowing her condition, I knew she needed extra hand at home. It’s her first pregnancy and it’s sure taking a whole lot on her. Her tone was soft but the type that needed immediate help or assistance from someone. I thought about it and within few seconds I replied with an affirmative to what she needed.
‘’Oh Brenda, thank you, we are expecting you soon’’, she said and the line went dead…..
At this moment, all I could think of was….. you all know right? But a friend needing help was also important. The following morning (my planned Saturday morning), by 8:00 am, I was at her door pressing the doorbell. Her husband came out to usher me in while welcoming me.
‘’We were expecting you later in the day, thanks for coming this early’’, he said excitedly.
I had left my home at 6:30 am to beat the normal Lagos weekend party rush. My friend was sitting in the couch facing the TV and from her smile, you could sense how happy she was seeing ‘’a helping hand’’.
Her face was swollen and according to her she experience these every morning ranging from super itchy, leg cramps, nauseated, metallic taste in her stomach, eating like pig, numbing, back ache, hot flushes, heartburn etc.
‘’Only you experiencing all these?’’, I asked jokingly.
‘’Don’t worry, it’s a matter of time, you will soon be carrying one in you’’, she replied. We both smiled with her saying some people do not experience anything during pregnancy. Maybe, you could be one of them.
I better be one!
So here I am writing on some morning sickness tips to help first time or soon to be again moms overcome morning sickness. Remember, being pregnant is one of the best feelings for a woman though it’s a bitter sweet experience as it also comes with disturbances. There are so many ways, but I will just list a few points I know through my personal reading.
- Never get out of your bed in the morning without eating.
For this, try to get some snacks or anything that you feel helps your situation and keep them by your bedside at night to eat in the morning. Protein snacks will be just right for you. Munch some immediately after you wake. In doing this, the rush to throw up won’t take place immediately.
- Don’t even think of sugar or any sugary foods.
Sugary foods will only end up increasing your blood sugar level and you surely would feel sorry for yourself. So it’s a no, no, no thing even if you have gotten a sugary mouth. So, sugary thing isn’t your friend but an enemy.
- Get more sleep, yes sleep.
Rest is good. Having better prenatal sleep patterns might improve a pregnant woman’s overall health and that of the baby in the womb and when born.
Whether it’s the less-than-pleasant whiff of the garbage truck rumbling by, or the smell of your coworker’s perfume in a crowded elevator, certain scents will turn your tummy. Ugly smells, smells you can’t get away from, and potent smells will make you nauseous.”
When you can’t open a window or walk away, try sniffing fresh scents. Carry a bottle of lemon extract or a sprig of fresh rosemary in your bag, and stealthily sneak a sniff when needed.
- You need lots of water to stay hydrated all the time
It’s a common knowledge that 8 glasses of water is good and right for the body daily, as it keeps the body sound and vitalized. An expecting mom should also keep to this routine and mustn’t go below level. It’s essential to get your liquids in because the more dehydrated you become, the more nauseated you’ll become. To stay hydrated, try different ways of tricking your body into accepting fluids such as crunching on ice chips, cheese curls, salty potatoes, hot beverages etc.
- Get Creative with Ginger
Ginger has long been touted as a stomach soother, and studies have shown that it may help quell the queasies. Try adding a thin slice of ginger to hot water or tea, or sipping flat ginger ale. Doesn’t sound appetizing? Snack on a handful of crystallized ginger candy, nosh on gingersnaps or gingerbread, or find your own tasty way to soup up the root. Erick suggests microwaving ginger jam and pouring it over vanilla ice cream.
Prenatal vitamins can be tough initially, no doubt. Most women can’t stand the sight of the size not to mention of the stomach upset one could experience. New Chapter vitamins are uniquely formulated to support the health needs of each life stage. They ferment the individual vitamins and minerals with beneficial probiotics and whole foods to transform their multivitamins into whole-food fermented nutrients – the result are nourishing supplements gentle enough to take anytime, even on an empty stomach.
- The Paleo Diet can also be tried as some women have given positive comments about it.
More than 50% of pregnant women experience morning sickness. Morning sickness refers to the nauseous feeling you may have during the first trimester of pregnancy, which is a result of the increased hormones in your body.
Morning sickness can be accompanied with vomiting. Many doctors think morning sickness is a good sign because it means the placenta is developing well.
One thing we all should know is that, what works for one woman won’t work for the other, so therefore, know your body and try to keep tab on what is good for it.
So, let me read your thoughts on this and also add yours.
